Match Report - Castell Alun Colts

First team 1 - 3 Castell Alun Colts.  Welsh National League Premier Division. 23/01/10

The first team played their first game for 6 weeks against a Castell Alun side who occupied 3rd spot in the Welsh National League Premier division table.

The inactivity for both sides over recent weeks showed in the opening 20 minutes, as goal-scoring chances were few and far between.

The opening goal came after 26 minutes, when a long ball fell at the feet of striker Leon Bowen, who stuck a brilliant shot, and left goal keeper Gareth Roberts with no chance of making a save as the ball went in at his far post.

The visitors shaded the remainder of the half, however it was the home side that struck next, as a perfectly time cross by Dave Cunnah was met by a captain Iwan Jones with a diving header to bring the scores level.

Corwen came into the game more in the early stages of the second half, and created some goal scoring opportunities, but were unable top find a second goal.

Leon Bowen added his second goal of the game near the hour mark, as Corwen failed to clear their lines from a corner.  Bowen initially received the ball a few yards from the goal line, but he was unable to get a shot away, so he opted to lob the ball from further out, which cleared a crowded defence, and went in just below the cross bar.

The home side pressed in search of another equaliser, and came close on a few occasions, but the Castell Alun goalkeeper made a good save from a close range Andrew Roberts shot, and Dewi Edwards hit the post.

In the closing stages of the match Corwen switched to playing 3 at the back, and pressed further forward, which allowed more space for a Castell Alun counter attack, which eventually lead to Leon Bowen completing his hat-trick, as he beat Gareth at his far post again with a shot from outside the box.
