Match Report

Corwen 6 – 0 Acrefair Youth

Welsh National League Premier Division. 01/02/08

Man of the match: Gethin Edwards

A strong wind and a bobbly pitch didn’t stop Corwen from playing some brilliant football throughout the game and recording their biggest win of the season, making it a bakers dozen of wins in a row.

Corwen took the lead after 4 minutes; a cross from Andy from the right was met at the far post by the head of Dewi. Corwen continued to use the advantage of the wind to keep Acrefair penned into their own half.

Gethin increased Corwen’s lead with a well-taken left footed shot from just inside the box. Gethin scored Corwen’s third goal, as Acrefair failed to clear their lines when the ball fell to Gethin by the edge of the box, Gethin beet one man before slotting the ball home.

Corwen had several good opportunities to increase their lead even more, as Elfyn hit the bar from 6 yards out with a header, while Eilir and Elfyn both had one on one’s with the keeper, but both failed to increase Corwen’s lead. The only negative aspect of the first half performance was an injury to Bevan, but Ioan came on to replace him and played really well on his home debut.

Corwen were playing into the wind in the second half, but were still too strong for their opponents. It wasn’t long into the game before Eilir scored a close range header to make it 4, which was his 14th goal of the season. The next goal wasn’t long in coming either, as Gethin completed his second hat trick against Acrefair this season, which was also his 13th goal of the season.

There was still time for someone outside the Edwards family to get on the score sheet. Riche Bodden picked up the ball just behind the half way line, and ran down the left wing, going past 4 players, and with no clear passing opportunity he decided to keep going, and toe poked the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

A strong defensive display enabled Corwen to keep only their 4th clean sheet of the season, and their second in a row. There could have been more goals too, as Corwen created a number of good opportunities, but some brilliant saves from Craig Worthington kept the score line down.
